Bad Baby Naxos, Greece

It wouldn't have been the same with living in the Mediterranean for five months, and not visiting Naxos. It is a two hour ferry ride from what was my home Paros, and Mykonos. Its filled to the brim with fresh fruit, olive trees, fishing, and sunlight on the traditional Greek culture. It would be an understatement to say it didn't top the islands for the most greenery with high mountains and and fertile valleys. My cousins came from the states to visit me this week, and it was the first time seeing a familiar face since August, and I was child like again. Giggles.. and Giggles...at everything and it wasn't the ouzo talking. It was pure joy!

Coming off the ferry you see the Portara, the doorway to the ancient temple to Apollo, one of the muscular greek deities. Sadly, it was never finished, but it sits on the small harbor bringing in all the honeys. It faces Delos a sacred isla. As a student it was insisted we see the Archaeological museum of Naxos, so we checked out the collection of prehistoric artifacts to put the travels into perspective. Another little historic chabang was the Kouroi of Flerio. It was a  baby hike to all the massive statues. Did the Ancient Greeks just thrive on the mediterranean diet or were they pretentious enough to just create a lifelong lasting sculpture out of stones.

This babe is underrated. Enough with always flocking to infamous Santorini, give Naxos a little loving too. Experience there authentic Citron. Its a fruit of the Arab countries, kinda like a green apple. Naxos locals put it to good use as a Kitron liquor. Visit the Vallindras Distillerin in Halki, and see how its done!

After long hours of site seeing and playtime with friends, I was ready to sit down for a glass of wine. Every Island seems to be famous for some type of delicious food.. well Naxos got the hotts for potatoes. Famous for their soil and climatic conditions, hes the seed for Greek potatoes. Which is funny...! Because this girl, thought she would order wine, and some fancy potatoes. Well silly me, there just french fries! How typical.. the American girl orders french fries! My thought was they would be in olive oil and garlic baked or broiled... but that wasn't the case. Other delightful cuisines on Naxos told by the boys were.. octopus, and some lamb with their greek salad, and a good vegetable non dairy slaw! Majority of the Greeks understand when you say no feta, but sometimes the language barrier overtakes and you end up with a block of feta before your eyes!

Take your time wandering the Interior villages and sights of  Chora (Naxos town). The picturesque white walls covered in flowers leaves you wondering vulnerably, but this isn't a bad thing.

After stumbling into coffee shops ordering a  double espresso...Ένα διπλό εσπρέσο (ena diplo espresso).and always say thank you pronounced...parakalo..παρακαλώ! Its completely acceptable to sit and have coffee at a cute cafe for hours. Its impossible not to be wondering the streets and run across endless amounts of bakeries and coffee shops.. so embrace it!

After overdosing on greek coffee, its only acceptable to get traditional greek man to make me a mug to sip out of. So.. hop on a bus, take a nap, and head over to Damalas Village where you will find a 120 year old family owned pottery workshop. The little man inside will come outside, grab your hand.. and bring you to his ceramic wheel, and give you a quick lesson on the pottery making process.

Greeks are extremely hospitable people.  They love to share their food, language, traditions, conversations and drinks with you! Through living on a Greek island for 4 months I learned relationships are the core for all happening in Greek life.

After two long days of aimlessly wondering the streets of Naxos with good friends, even better coffee, it was time to take the ferry home to Paros Island. The Blue Star Ferry. Its a bit of a glamours ride too, I mean its no private yacht, grab a cafe or wine, watch the sunset and rest those little eyes and drift on to the next island.

pardon the yamaha motor.. bye bye naxos.
